FAQ
Did you study art?

No, but drawing and art is something that I enjoyed since childhood and I always found a way back to it, either by joining Urban Sketchers groups or writing a part of my MA thesis on it (the Pre-Raphaelites' interpretation of John Keats' medievalist poetry). I consider myself self-taught, fuelled by a passion for coffee which opened doors towards commissioned work!

What does the Instagram name "Anna Namalovala" mean?

My original Instagram name actually means "Anna painted" in Czech! I thought of changing it when I moved to France, but then decided to keep it as a connection to my home country. It also helped connect with Slavic visitors at markets who understood the meaning sometimes!
However, I also go by "Anna Marie Draws" as an imperfect translation.

Why watercolour?

I love the textures it creates as you add more layers for saturation and how well it mixes with other mediums, like white ink for highlights or aquarelle pencils for texture. I also enjoy mixing it with coffee which has a different texture once dry. It all connects well with my philosophy of creating authentic, hand-drawn illustrations!

Why cafés?

I believe that they are a very positive place - they inspire one to slow down with a drink and/or treat, do a creative activity like journaling, writing, reading or provide a place to meet family, friends or (potential) partners. I am always inspired by the different interior styles that provide refuge from our busy schedules.

Why "painting with coffee" workshops?

As an event organiser by profession, I enjoyed animating workshops - and it felt right to create workshops where I can try to motivate participants to be creative, using everyday materials like coffee and ink pens!

Do all the places drawn by you exist?

Yes! I do not paint everything "on the spot", except for commissioned personal pieces, I base all drawings on the in-person experience and then add/delete elements to create a composition that will convey the atmosphere I felt in the space.
